Cannonau di Sardegna red wine

Cannonau di Sardegna wine is obtained from the combination of the Cannonau grapes imported from Spain (known there with the name of Alicante) with local grapes cultivated all over the island.
When the Cannonau is produced with grapes cultivated in Oliena (Nuoro) is called "Nepente di Oliena"; "Capo Ferrato" is the name given to vines cultivated in the areas of Castiadas, Muravera, San Vito, Villaputzu, Villasimius (Cagliari); and finally "Jerzu" is the name for all the vines cultivated in Jerzu and Cadedu (Nuoro).

The Cannonau di Sardegna usually has an intense, deep ruby red colour tending to orange with ageing.
The scent is pleasant, characteristic: dry flavour, tasty.
The alcohol content is 12,5°.
It´s kept in barriques for 7 months.
The " Vintage " has an alcohol content of 13° and 2 years of ageing.

The Cannonau can be "rose´" as well: it has the same characteristics, but the colour is more brilliant.
Other types of Cannonau wines produced are: the "dry liqueureus dry wine" with a minimum alcohol content of 18°; and the "sweet liqueureus wine" with a minimum alcohol content of 16°.

Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC)

It is a quality recognition for wines produced in small areas of which they keep the same geographical name.
As a rule, the discipline to achieve this recognition is very strict: the wines need to pass a series of careful chemical tests (law 164/92).
